Our work at The Job Gym means we see a diverse range of learners, who come to us with different needs and at different levels of education. For some of our learners, the workplace represents a significant set of barriers that must be overcome in order to be successful.
This was the case for David Jackson. David came to us, claiming benefits, and struggling with trying to find employment. He struggled with reading, writing, and maths, and was uncomfortable with communicating to people at a professional level. The tutors at The Job Gym supported David throughout his learning, and helped him gain confidence alongside growing functional skills. This was done through enrolling David on our functional skills programmes, as well as simulating professional situations, to allow him to become familiar with professional situations. When he left us, he had passed his functional skills courses, and was preparing to take his first steps towards employment.
When asked what advice he would give to other people in similar situations, David said: “Go for it, do it. All it needs is just one step.”
At The Job Gym, our first priority is making sure our learners are equipped for the workplace. This means breaking down barriers to success, such as poor functional skills, limited communication skills, and low confidence. Nothing should stop people from finding employment, and we are committed to making sure that we help as many people as possible overcome their personal limitations and succeed.
